Music when you're down and out
Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal has this theme: Name ten pieces of music that comfort you in times of stress and sadness. [see: "The music cure"]
I guess He's either not in my age cathegorie, my class or mindset because the first songs that comes to my mind are not from the firsxt movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G.
Don't get me wrong. I was brought up on Ravel, Mozart, Nana Mouskouri and other obscure French Canadian music celebrities.
1. SunShowers—Billie Holliday. Might as well face it, you're not happy right now. So hanging out with ol'Billie won't hurt. She wasn't that happy either. BUT, she sang this one song were she sounded like she could truly see the ligth at the end of the tunnel. If you try and find it. Good luck. I had it on a thick 1960 vynil. Then I sold it when I moved out from my parent's. Don't ask.
2. Come, Let Us Go Back To God—Sam Cooke. I like Gospel. The ol'school style.
3. I can't go for that—Hall and Oats. You can't be angry for too long when listening for this tune. Just think of Oats' mustache. Instant smile. Guarantee.
4. Lion Heart—Garnet Silk. Reaggae will get you going. Especially with the real deal.
5. Don't you forget it—Glen Lewis. A bit of cheezy R&B is always relaxing. I don't know anything else by that guy but this tune works for me.
6. Good Vibes—Horace Andy. Some real simple Rasta music. This song is so silly in a way, you can't help but smile. I guess you could also do the same as Horace. Me, it just makes me parano so I stick to just listening to him.
7. Gabriel Rene with Nicole Weib song- Om2 [Om Lounge series] Sorry don't know the name of this song but this is a remake of the famous Summertime. Very soothing.
8. Baba—Salif Keita. Now feel the love.
9. Let It Go—Herbalizer. This chick know it. She can sure rymhe. but I can't spell.
10. Clarinetitis—Benny Goodman. That'll get you whistling along. Well I do anyway.
